Fun fact: Aerobics got me through law school and my first few years of practice.
Cardio sculpt and step aerobics were my favorites. Possibly because of all the dance-y-ness…
I’m not a great dancer but, in these classes, I got to be the proverbial dancing queen under the guise of exercise.
The best thing was, I didn’t have to be great to feel great. And, if I let my mind wander (to, say, more stressful things…or any kind of self-consciousness…), I’d instantly lose my way and regret it.
And, isn’t that a great metaphor for life? It taught me to dance in the moment. To dance to the music that is playing. To dance like no one is watching.
There were awesome options on campus and I had gyms I loved just around the corner in London and New York with great offerings. My aerobics practice fell off, though, when I moved somewhere more spread out and my schedule got more complicated with commutes and motherhood. Plus, it seemed like gyms largely stopped offering the classes I loved most.
So…it has been a real joy this year to find that sparkle again.
Yes, I love yoga, hiking and walks of all kinds. But, there is nothing quite like the sparkle of having a full-on dance party in high-energy room full of whoop-whoops and woo-hoos. And, somehow, I had misplaced that.
What makes you sparkle? And is there any sparkle you’ve misplaced that you’d like to revisit?
Also, here’s to dancing like no one is watching. They’re usually not anyway. And, regardless, this is YOUR dance. Shake what you’ve got!
